ROLE BREAKDOWN

RALPHIE (lead, young male character, vocal range = F#3 to D5)

One of the most iconic roles in holiday movie history brought to life in musical theater form! Ralphie is a bright and winsome 5th grader with what some parents might call and “overactive imagination” whose hopes, dreams, and anxieties come to life through song and dance throughout the show. Must be a strong singer.      Role open to young actors of all genders.

THE OLD MAN (lead, older male character, vocal range = B♭2 to G4)

Boring dad vibes on the outside but on the inside… he’s just a silly lil’ guy (with extremely questionable taste in lamps). A blue-collar guy he usually expects the worst out of most situations; but is transformed into a true "song and dance" man in his moments of fantasy. Must be a strong mover and comedic actor.

MOTHER (lead, older female character, vocal range = G3 to D♭5)

An archetypal housewife, she keeps the house moving with a smile despite limited funds, bickering children, and cranky husbands (again, with extremely questionable taste in lamps). Has two solo numbers!

RANDY (lead, young male character, vocal range = G3 to D♭5)

Ralphie’s younger brother. He’s cute, lovable, whiny, and gets away with everything. You know, like younger brothers are.  Must be funny!     Role open to young actors of all genders.

MISS SHIELDS (featured, older female character, vocal range = F#3 to D5)

Ralphie’s teacher who seems normal at first… but transforms into a dynamic, show-stopping lounge singer and   tap dancer.    Has a big solo number!

SANTA (featured, older male character, vocal range = B♭2 to F4)

A grumpy Santa-impersonator at the local Higbee’s department store. He hates his job and to him— all the kids are on the naughty list. He judges each kid quickly and harshly to great comedic effect. Actor can also double in the ensemble.     Role open to older teenage actors of all genders.

FLICK (featured ensemble, younger male character)

One of Ralphie’s best friends. In one iconic scene, he gets his tongue stuck to a flagpole. Has a few solo lines.     Role open to young actors of all genders.

SCHWARTZ (featured ensemble, younger male character)

One of Ralphie’s best friends. In one iconic scene, he becomes the scapegoat for when Ralphie utters the “mother of all swear words” (don’t worry, he doesn’t actually say it). Has a few solo lines.     Role open to young actors of all genders.

SCUT FARKUS (featured ensemble, younger male character)

Ralphie’s bully. He’s loud and obnoxious, always appearing at just the wrong time to intimidate his victims. Like most childhood bullies, he’s not actually that much older than Ralphie, just bigger.    Role open to young actors of all genders.

GROVER DILL (featured ensemble, younger male character)

Farkus’ younger sidekick. See’s Farkus as his "hero” and laughs at all his cruel jokes. Together, they rule the neighborhood.     Role open to young actors of all genders.

ESTHER JANE, MARY BETH & NANCY (featured ensemble, younger female characters)

Ralphie’s other classmates.    Role open to young actors of all genders.

ENSEMBLE

When this show is done in a professional setting, it usually has separate adult and child ensembles. However, this production, being all kids, will largely combine these ensembles therefore doubling the stage time for all actors. Ensemble characters include schoolchildren, elves, dancing leg lamps and more!     Lots of singing and dancing for all involved.
